UB Intramural Softball

Eligibility:

  1. All players MUST be CURRENT STUDENTS at UB.
  2. All players MUST have a valid UB Student ID card at ALL games.
  3. A team has up until it's third game to solidify its roster; at which time all player names and ID numbers MUST be submitted. All ID numbers will be checked.
  4. Once a player has played a game for one team, they may not switch teams. A player can only play for one team per division.

Game:

  1. A game consists of 7 innings. However, if after 60 minutes of play the game is not completed, the inning that is in progress shall be the final innings.
  2. A "MERCY RULE" will be applied to any game in which the runs margin is 10 or greater, with at least 4 complete innings being played. "Last Ups" are always awareded if the Home team is behind. There will be no Mercy Rule in Championship games.
  3. A complete team consistes of 10 players. However, a team may start a game with a minimum of 7 players, and must finish the game with at least 7 players. Co-Rec teams must field 3 females. Failure to do so will require playing with one less player per missing female, as well as an out in the batting order per missing female.
  4. A batting order can consist of 11 players.
  5. Teams are allowed a 10-minute grace period after the schedules game starting time to field the required number of players. Failure to do so will result in a 1-0 forfeit loss. Forfeit games cannot be rescheduled.
  6. A flip of a coin will determine which team bats first and which team bats last, with the coin loss winner having choice. In the playoffs, the highest seeded teams are automatically given the Home team privlege.
  7. A team may throw the ball around the infield before the first inning only. Infield practice will not be permitted between out or innings for the remainder of the game.
  8. Any unnecessary roughness will not be tolerated. Violaters will be banned from Intramural competition.
  9. Only the manager or captain may discuss a call with the umpires. Anyone harassing an umpire will be ejected from the game, and subsequent eligibility may be jeopardiized.
  10. All other rules not listed are guided by NCAA official softball rules.

Pitching & Batting:

  1. Pitchers are limited to 3 warm-up pitches at the start of the game and before each inning.
  2. Pitches must be thrown underhand with 6 to 12 feet of arc to be considered legal. A flat or high pitch is an automatic ball.
  3. A strike is any ball that is pitched within the legal limits and lands on home plate, or the rubber strike mat placed directly behind home plate.
  4. A batter's fourth foul is an automatic out.
  5. A batter who throws their bat after contact is an automatic out.
  6. No bunting.

Base Running:

  1. There is no stealing or leading off. A runner may not leave the base until the pitch has made contact at the plate. A runner leaving the base too soon will be given one warning before being called out.
  2. A base runner may slide past a base, after making contact with it, and is not out. However, a base runner is out if he over-runs the base and is tagged.
  3. Any head first slide will result in an out.
  4. Base sliding must be performed with discretion. If undue contact occurs, the base runner will be called out and is subject to ejection.
  5. A base runner and fielder must each make the effort to avoid contact at all cost.
  6. An advancing base runner cannot go out of his way to make contact with the person covering the base. An avoidable upright collision results in an automatic out, and possible ejection of the runner.
  7. The player covering the base must keep the base available for the advancing runner. Blocking a base will result in the runner being called safe, and possible ejection of the fielder in question.

The Field:

  1. The fields are located in front of Clark Hall on South Campus.
  2. Intramural Services will provide bases and game balls. You must supply your own bats and gloves. The catchers should wear a mask.
  3. Players are prohibited from wearing metal-spiked shoes. Non-metal cleats are acceptable.
  4. Two bases will be placed side-by-side at first base. One is reserved for the first baseman, with the extra base (placed in fould territory) being reserved for the base runner. Each player must make the effort to avoid contact.
  5. "Out of Play" territory exists in all areas 12 feet beyond each foul line.
    1. Any ball hit "Out of Play" is foul, and no attempt to play the ball should be made.
    2. Any ball that is thrown "Out of Play" will be considered a dead ball, and all base runners will be allowed to advance 1 extra base. A base runner must be more than half way to their base to be awarded an additional base.

Weather:

  1. Games called because of inclement weather will be complete if 4 or more innings have been played. If the cancellation occurs in the top of an inning, the score will revert back to the last completed inning. If cancellation occurs in the bottom half of an inning, one or two things will occur.
    1. If the home team is behind, the game will revert back to the last completed inning.
    2. If the home team is leading, the game will not revert back, and the home team will be considered the winner.
  2. If a rainout does occur, the games rained out will be made up the following week. The remaining games will be shifted forward one week.
  3. In case of poor weather conditions, Intramural Services will make a decisioni regarding schedules play 2 hours before the first scheduled game. Captains must contact the Intramural Office (at 645.3148) for the decision on questionable days.

PLAYERS MUST HAVE VALID UB STUDENT ID CARDS AT ALL GAMES, NO ID MEANS YOU CANNOT PLAY!
